GRASS VALLEY — The California Highway Patrol Grass Valley office launches a 24-hour Maximum Enforcement Period focused on speeding today. The operation runs from 6 AM on April 28 until 5:59 AM on April 29. Officers will actively monitor roadways day and night and take enforcement action against unsafe speeds as part of a statewide campaign.

Patrols cover State Routes 20, 49, and 174. Enforcement also extends to unincorporated roadways in western Nevada County, northeastern Yuba County, and western Sierra County. New patrol officers place added emphasis on local county roads such as Wolf Road, Dog Road, Lower Colfax Road, and Banner Lava Cap Road.

Officer Sean Armacher with the Grass Valley CHP office stated speeding reduces driver reaction times to changing traffic conditions and also greatly increases crash severity. Statewide CHP figures show over 491,000 speed citations last year, along with more than 400 deaths and 68,000 injuries tied to unsafe speeds.

The enforcement period means drivers face increased patrols and a greater risk of citations. Officers exercise discretion in some cases but are directed to issue automatic tickets for speeds exceeding the limit by 15 miles per hour or more.
