WESTERN SIERRA COUNTY — Tuesday morning, PG&E announced that they will be shutting off power to western Sierra County amid concerns over high wind and fire danger. Additionally, Downieville and Sierra City town generators will not be turned on, as they would be powering above-ground power lines and pose a fire risk.

The power will be cut at approximately 4:00 PM on Friday, October 18th, and is estimated to be restored by 11:00 AM on Sunday, October 20th. Though winds are expected to subside on Saturday afternoon, PG&E will inspect power lines and equipment before restoring power.

Affected communities include Bassetts / Gold Lake, Green Acres, Sierra City, Downieville, Goodyears, Indian Valley, Pike, and Alleghany. The Sierra County Sheriff’s Office suggests taking the following measures to prepare for the outage:

Charge your devices and backup batteries.

Stock up on non-perishable food and water.

Have flashlights and emergency supplies ready.

Ensure your generator (if you have one) is ready to use safely.

The outage is expected to coincide with a red flag warning, signifying warm temperatures, very low humidities, and strong winds.
