SIERRAVILLE — Crews will continue installing broadband infrastructure along State Route 89 between Sierraville and Truckee this week. The effort forms part of the $42 million State Route 89 Middle Mile Broadband Network project.
Work includes placement of broadband conduit, fiber-optic cables, cable marker posts, and vaults. The infrastructure will link to local networks and expand high-speed internet access for homes, businesses, and community institutions in rural areas. Senate Bill 156, signed by Governor Gavin Newsom in 2021, authorized the open-access middle-mile network.
Various one-way traffic controls will remain in effect next week, according to a Caltrans advisory. Controls run from 9 PM to 7 AM Sunday and from 8 PM to 7 AM Monday through Thursday between Alder Creek Road and Interstate 80. Controls operate from 7 AM to 7 PM Monday through Thursday between Rice Canyon Road and Old Truckee Road.

The California Department of Technology manages the statewide Middle Mile Broadband Network program. Caltrans oversees construction on the State Route 89 segment, with Teichert serving as the contractor. Installation began in spring 2025 and is planned to run through fall 2026 along the corridor from Interstate 80 in Nevada County to the Sierra-Plumas County line.
