LAKES BASIN — A dirt bike crash on a 4x4 off-highway vehicle trail near Little Deer Lake prompted a multi-agency rescue Wednesday morning in western Sierra County, according to the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office. The crash was reported at approximately 11:20 AM, and one patient was injured, possibly with a broken kneecap, according to radio traffic.

Emergency personnel from Downieville Ambulance, the Sierra City Fire Department, and Tahoe Forest Engine 362 were dispatched after the sheriff’s office received the call. The crash site was difficult to reach because of the rugged terrain, which led the sheriff’s office to request a California Highway Patrol helicopter for a hoist rescue.

CHP helicopter H20 responded to the area and carried out the aerial rescue operation. As a precaution, Sierra County deputies, Sierra County Search and Rescue’s hasty team, and Sierra City Fire personnel staged nearby to assist if needed.

The helicopter crew successfully hoisted the patient from the crash site to a landing zone. From there, the patient was transferred to a ground ambulance for transportation to a hospital.

The Sierra County Sheriff’s Office credited several agencies for their roles in the response, including Downieville Fire Department, Sierra City Fire Department, Tahoe National Forest, Plumas National Forest, California Highway Patrol, and Sierra County Search and Rescue. The office said the agencies showed “professionalism, teamwork, and dedication during this rescue operation.”

“Their continued commitment to serving our communities is greatly appreciated,” the sheriff’s office said.
