QUINCY — The Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship (SBTS) wrapped up its 2026 Earn-A-Bike program, through which five local children ages 7 to 9 earned brand-new Woom OFF AIR mountain bikes after completing three field sessions. The bikes feature disc brakes, nine gears, and front suspension. Organizers described the models as the perfect beginner bike. SBTS organizes the Earn-A-Bike program, with WoombikesUSA supplying the bicycles.
The first field session included a hike, during which children learned trail etiquette and trail dynamics, such as drainage, slope, and tread. The second session involved hands-on trail work, with participants practicing tread repair, brushing, and drainage work. In the third session, staff at Yuba Expeditions covered chain lubing and tire pumping. Children then received fittings on the new bikes. The experience ended with a first ride in the South Park trail system in Quincy. Riders learned to shift, brake, climb, and descend.

SBTS selected participants through an application process requiring a written statement, a video, or an audio recording. In their submissions, applicants explained what they hoped to learn from the program and why they wanted a new mountain bike.
“Earn a Bike is key to creating lifelong riders and land stewards, and the smiles are just the BEST!” wrote SBTS in a post on social media.
