TRUCKEE — The California Boating and Waterways Commission will conduct a tour of the Donner Lake Boat Launch Facility Project on Wednesday, May 6, at 10 AM. The public may attend the tour, which starts at the site located at 15511 Donner Pass Road in Truckee. Commissioners and staff will hold the quarterly meeting at 10 AM on Thursday, May 7, at the Steve Randall Community Recreation Center, 10981 Truckee Way. Both events remain open to residents and visitors.

The commission consists of seven members appointed by the governor and confirmed by the state Senate. State law mandates the commission to advise the Division of Boating and Waterways on all relevant matters and to review proposed loans and grants for boating facilities. The division, part of California State Parks, serves as the state expert on recreational boating. It funds improvements to public access points, supports safety education, and promotes environmentally responsible practices on waterways statewide. Recreational boating contributes billions of dollars annually to the California economy and involves millions of participants.

The tour provides an opportunity to inspect the current conditions at the Donner Lake boat launch site. Upgrades to the facility have not been completed and remain in the bidding qualification phase. Project documents show the Truckee Donner Recreation and Park District received a $1,702,400 grant from the Harbors and Watercraft Revolving Fund to support the work, with bids closed in late January 2026 and board action on contract award pending. The proposed enhancements include an extended launch ramp to extend seasonal use, replacement of boarding floats, accessible pathways and parking, lot repaving, and updated signage. Participants will see how state support helps maintain and improve local recreational resources.

Division staff will present reports on current programs and recent accomplishments during the meeting. Chairperson Tom Pier plans to update attendees on commission activities. The agenda covers topics relevant to boating and waterways management throughout California. Members of the public can participate in person at the recreation center or join remotely via Zoom or the Cal-Span platform. Agendas and virtual access details appear on the California State Parks public notices page.

Those planning to attend the tour or meeting should review the full agenda in advance. Individuals with disabilities who require assistance must contact the commission clerk at dbwcommissionclerk@parks.ca.gov or by phone at (916) 902-8838 before arriving. The events support equal access for all participants. Information about the commission and division programs remains available through the dbw.parks.ca.gov website.
