High School Baseball – 4/30

The results of recent games for the northeastern California teams we’re following, along with outlooks for upcoming games, are posted below:

Bear River Bruins: Since our last report, the Bruins’ non-conference game against the East Nicolaus Spartans was rained out last Thursday; the team edged out Sacramento’s Burbank Titans in another non-conference game, 3-2, by scoring twice in the last inning; and lost a slugfest to the Marysville Indians, 11-15. Yesterday, after our deadline, the Bruins made up the rainout against East Nicolaus, and tomorrow the team plays its last regular-season game, a rematch against the Marysville Indians.

Chester Volcanoes: Over the past week, the Volcanoes overwhelmed the Burney Raiders, 12-2, to gain second place in the Five Star League (FSL) before losing a nonconference game, 3-14, to the Loyalton Grizzlies. Today, the Volcanoes face the much higher-ranked Redding Christian Lions in a battle for second place in the FSL. Next week, the team closes out its regular season play against the Burney Pirates (a team they beat 12-2 on 4/22), the Los Molinos Bulldogs (the first-place team in the FSL), and a rematch against the Redding Christian Lions of Palo Cedro.

Colfax Falcons: Last week, the Falcons lost a two-game series against the hot Wheatland Pirates, a team coming into the series on a five-game winning streak, by scores of 1-4 and 1-14. Then, on Tuesday of this week, after coming from behind to tie the Oakmont Vikings, 2-2, in the top of the sixth inning, the team gave up a run in the bottom of the sixth and lost the contest. Today, the Falcons face the Vikings again to close out their regular season with hopes of finishing fifth in the Pioneer Valley League (PVL).

Lassen Grizzlies: Since our last report, the Lassen Grizzlies extended their win streak to six games with victories over the Yreka Miners (15-8) and Shasta Lake’s Central Valley Falcons (15-5). Tomorrow, the team travels to Shasta Lake for a rematch with the Falcons. Then, next week, the Grizzlies close out their regular season againstCottonwood’s West Valley Eagles, the team with which they are currently tied for first place in the Northern League.

Loyalton Grizzlies: After, no surprise, sweeping a doubleheader against the Westwood Lumberjacks, 13-1 and 18-1, last Thursday, 4/23, and clobbering the Chester Volcanoes, 14-3, on Monday of this week, Loyalton’s Grizzlies are traveling today for another doubleheader, this time against the relatively weak Tulelake Honkers. Following these games, next Monday, Loyalton’s Grizzlies will be traveling to Hayfork for yet another doubleheader with hopes to cement their first-place position in the Evergreen League.

Modoc Braves: Last Friday, 4/24, the Braves saw their six-game winning streak end with a tough, 8-9, loss in the first game of a doubleheader against the Weed Cougars. However, in the second game on 4/24, the Braves rebounded with a 9-4 victory and are now tied with the Cougars for second place in the Shasta Cascade League, one game behind the first-place Etna Lions. Next, the Braves will host Weaverville’s winless Trinity Wolves on Saturday, 5/2, before ending the regular season a week from tomorrow with a doubleheader against Etna in games I expect to determine this year’s champion in the Shasta Cascade League.

Nevada Union Miners: Following an easy, 14-5, non-conference defeat of the Reed Raiders of Sparks, NV, last Friday, the Miners were beaten, 3-7, on Monday of this week by the Yuba City Honkers. Yesterday, after our deadline, the Miners had a rematch with the Honkers, and tomorrow the Miners will close out their season with yet another matchup against the Honkers.

Placer Hillmen: After posting three one-run (2-1, 5-4, and 6-5) victories against the Yuba City Honkers since our last edition and walloping Yuba City’s River Valley Falcons 20-0 on Monday of this week, the Hillmen have two games left in their regular season, both against the River Valley Falcons. By winning these final two games, the Hillmen would end up tied for first place in the Foothill Valley League with the Roseville Tigers.

Plumas Charter Warriors: Following a sweep (8-2 and 20-0) of the Tulelake Honkers last Thursday, 4/23, the Warriors constructed a five-game win streak. This skein, however, ended with a 2-3 loss in their first game of a doubleheader against the Hayfork Lumberjacks on Monday of this week. Nonetheless, after the Warriors took the second game, 5-2, the team will play for the Evergreen League championship when they travel to face the Loyalton Grizzlies on Monday, 5/11.

Portola Tigers: This week, on Tuesday, 4/28, the Tigers halted a nine-game losing streak by traveling to play the Williams Hornets and sweeping a doubleheader, 13-1 and 22-8. Next, after a non-conference game with the Virginia City Muckers tomorrow, the Tigers will finish this season’s Mid-Valley League (MVL) play with a doubleheader on the road against the Biggs Wolverines. Given their respective records, the Tigers’ chances of moving out of fifth place in the MVL are slim.

Quincy Trojans: After polishing off the Portola Tigers, 10-0, last Friday, 4/24, the Trojans, now fourth in the MVL, will play a doubleheader against the second-place Maxwell Panthers tomorrow. The Trojans will then have a week off before playing two games with the MVL’s last-place team, the Williams Hornets, to end the season.

Truckee Wolverines: Last Thursday, the Wolverines outscored the South Tahoe Vikings 5-2. Then, the following day, Truckee split a doubleheader with the Vikings. In the first game, the Wolverines were defeated in extra innings, 1-3. In the wild second game, Truckee held on to win, 14-13.
