Roundup of late-season results, playoff seedings, and league title races for area teams

5 min read

While some of the northeastern California teams we have been following have finished their seasons or are competing in postseason tournaments, others still have games where league championships are on the line. For last week’s results and outlooks for upcoming games, keep reading:

Bear River Bruins: After beating up on the Marysville Indians, 17-10, last Thursday afternoon, the Bruins finished their regular season in fourth place within the Pioneer Valley League. Yesterday, after our deadline, the Bruins, seeded #3 in Division 4 of the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs, played Vacaville’s Buckingham Charter Knights, the #12 seed, in the first round of the Division 4 tournament. Given the Bruins’ much better MaxPreps.com ranking (384 compared to the Knights’ 874), the odds of Bear River advancing to the Division 4 quarterfinals are very good.

Chester Volcanoes: After a 0-10 loss to the Redding Christian Lions last Thursday, the Volcanoes rebounded with a 14-5 victory over the Pirates Raiders on Monday of this week. The next day, however, the team was outscored 14-5 by the Five Star League’s first-place team, the Los Molinos Bulldogs. Tomorrow, 5/8, the Volcanoes travel to face the Redding Christian Lions, hoping to avenge their 10-0 loss on 4/30. Then, on Monday of next week, the team closes out its regular season play in a nonconference, road game against the Hayfork Timberjacks.

Colfax Falcons: Despite closing out their regular season with five straight losses and finishing sixth in the Pioneer Valley League (PVL), yesterday, the Falcons, seeded #6 in the 2026 Sac-Joaquin Section Baseball Playoffs, played Stockton’s Ben Holt College Prep Academy Bobcats, the tournament’s #12 seed. Since this game took place after the deadline for the 5/7 edition, I’ll report on the results next week.

Lassen Grizzlies: Last Friday, the Grizzlies extended their winning streak to seven games with a strong 15-5 win over Shasta Lake’s Central Valley Falcons. On Tuesday of this week, however, the team gave up two unearned runs, and Cottonwood’s West Valley Eagles gained sole possession of first place in the Northern League with a 4-3 victory. Tomorrow, the Grizzlies can regain a tie for first place in the Northern League when they close their regular season with a rematch against Cottonwood.

Loyalton Grizzlies: On Monday of this week, the team traveled to Trinity County and cemented their first-place position in the Evergreen League by sweeping a doubleheader over the Hayfork Lumberjacks, 7-1 and 1-0. Thus, next Monday, 5/11, the Grizzlies will be battling the league’s second-place team, Greenville’s Plumas Charter Warriors, in a doubleheader decider of the 2026 Evergreen League championship.

Modoc Braves: After Weaverville’s winless Trinity Wolves forfeited a doubleheader this past Saturday, 5/2, tomorrow the Braves, now holding second place in the Shasta Cascade League (SCL), will close out their regular season on the road with a doubleheader against the conference’s first-place team, the Etna Lions. The Braves have to sweep both games to win the SCL championship.

Nevada Union Miners: After closing their regular season with 0-7 and 4-7 losses last week against the Yuba City Honkers, the Miners were seeded #12 in Division 4 of the 2026 Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs. Thus, yesterday (drats, again too late for this week’s edition), the Miners traveled to Sacramento to play the #5-seeded Bradshaw Christian Pride. Will the Miners upset the Pride and advance to the quarterfinal round of these playoffs? Our next edition will have the answers.

Placer Hillmen: Having continued their dominance of the River Valley Falcons with 7-1 and 13-3 victories last week, the Hillmen and the Roseville Tigers both ended up with 15 wins and 3 losses in Foothill Valley League play. This tie for the conference’s 2026 title was broken, however, because the Roseville Tigers won two of the three games against the Hillmen. But the Hillmen are seeded #3 in Division 4 of the 2026 Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs. Will they meet the #1 seed, Roseville Tigers, for the tournament’s championship? Since the semifinals for this competition take place next Tuesday, 5/12, the answer will appear in next Thursday’s edition.

Plumas Charter Warriors: Since our last report, the Warriors triumphed 7-5 in a nonconference contest against the Burney Raiders. Today, the Warriors are playing the Portola Tigers in another non-league game, a warm-up for next Monday’s doubleheader against the Loyalton Grizzlies. If the Warriors sweep the doubleheader, they will have come from behind to capture the 2026 Evergreen League championship.

Portola Tigers: With a 15-4 victory over the Virginia City Muckers last Friday and an 11-1 win in the first game of a doubleheader against the Biggs Wolverines Tuesday of this week, the Tigers put together a four-game win streak. But in the second game of the doubleheader, the Wolverines posted 12 runs while the Tigers were shut out. Today, 5/7, the Tigers will finish their regular season with a nonconference game with Greenville’s Plumas Charter Warriors.

Quincy Trojans: Last Friday, errors committed by the Trojans led to a 0-6 loss in the first game of a doubleheader with the Maxwell Panthers. In the second game, a nine-inning contest, the Trojans were limited to two hits and suffered a tough 1-2 defeat. Tomorrow, the Trojans finish their regular season on the road against the Mountain Valley League’s last-place team, the winless Williams Hornets, and have a good chance of celebrating two victories on the long drive back to Quincy.

Truckee Wolverines: By dropping a doubleheader, 0-7 and 1-6, last week to Reno’s Wooster Cubs, the Wolverines finished their season sixth in Nevada’s 3A Northern League, posting an overall 12-17 win-loss record for the 2026 season
