We celebrate the remarkable life of John Voorhees VanDoren, who passed away peacefully at his home in Woodland, California, on May 15, 2026, at the age of 87.

John was born on July 2, 1938, in Alleghany, California, to Willard Voorhees VanDoren and Alta Lena VanDoren. Throughout his life, John wove a rich tapestry of love, service, friendship, and joy that touched the hearts of all who knew him.

John is preceded in death by both of his parents; 3 siblings, Willard Erl VanDoren, Richard Wallace VanDoren, and Inez Mae Elkins; and his daughter, Melinda Baker. He is survived by his wife Maudie VanDoren, son Lanson Lake, daughter Elaine Hardisty, 6 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.

John leaves behind a legacy of love through his beloved wife of 49 years, Maudie VanDoren, whom he married in 1977 in Belmont, California. Their union was a testament to enduring love and partnership. Together, they nurtured a beautiful blended family which brought unparalleled joy and pride to his life.

With great dedication, John graduated from Nevada Union High School in Grass Valley and went on to serve his country in the United States Army from 1962 to 1967. Following his military service, he embarked on a distinguished 30-year career as a skilled craftsman with AT&T. Throughout his years as a craftsman, John serviced offices throughout the Bay Area from the Peninsula, San Mateo, south through San Jose, California. His commitment and work ethic were admired by all who worked alongside him.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, John was deeply committed to his community. He was an active member of the Elks Lodge in both the Bay Area and Yolo County. Throughout his life, John was able to form lasting friendships and contribute to the spirit of fellowship that defined his character. In his life, he was able to forge bonds with his work, community, and family, and represented that of camaraderie and goodwill. John left a positive impact wherever he went.

Bowling was one of John's lifelong passions. His love for the sport began at his father's bowling alley in Palo Alto, where he worked and created many fond memories. Through bowling, John was able to connect with others and play a sport he loved.

John’s heart was forever tethered to the natural beauty of Sierra County, where he was born. He found immense joy exploring the various areas of the Sierra in his beloved Jeep. Weekend adventures with family and friends became treasured traditions, allowing him to share his love of the Sierra Nevada and create memories that would last a lifetime. These trips were more than just excursions; they were expressions of his generous spirit and his desire to bring happiness to those around him.

As we bid farewell to John, let us remember the warmth of his smile, the depth of his love, and his quick wit and humor that could brighten any moment. His memory will continue to be a guiding light for his family and friends. In honoring his life, we find solace in knowing that his legacy of love and joy will endure in the hearts of all who knew him.

In accordance with John’s wishes, no public services will be held. However, a private Military service will take place. To all who wished to be part of his final farewell, know that John was grateful for your friendship, kindness, and love. He wished the very best for each of you and hoped that your lives would be filled with happiness and love. John lived a full and meaningful life, and he was deeply loved. May he always be remembered.
