Poetry Reading Next Monday Evening #

During Library@Night next Monday, June 8, 6:00 to 8:00 PM, at the Downieville Library, poetry reading will begin at 6:30 PM. I will share some of my own poetry, and invite others to come and share poetry of their own creation. Or, come early (6:00) to browse through the library’s 100+ books of poetry, find something you like and that you would like to share. I look forward to seeing you and listening to your readings.

June: the Places #

Well, we have arrived at the sixth month of the year, commonly known as June. Long-time readers of this column may remember the discussion of where the month’s name derived (Issue 2022-22). So, we will not recover that ground. But, what about other ground — literally? Let’s take a look:

June, Alberta, Canada: a search on Wikipedia for “June” indicates this location, but then redirects to Lacombe County, Alberta — with no mention of June. I have no idea what that means?

June, Missouri: an unincorporated community in Newton County, Missouri. The post office of that name was established in 1900, but only remained in operation until 1905. According to local tradition, the community was named after the month the largest share of first settlers arrived.

June Mountain: this winter resort and ski area is located in the eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, located near June Lake (see below), southeast of Yosemite National Park, in Mono County. The ski area consists of two mountains: Rainbow Mountain (10,004’ elevation) and June Mountain (10,095’ elevation). It averages 250 inches of snowfall a year. It hosted the ski and snowboard portions of the 2006 California Winter Games.

June Island: one of the Debenham Islands located in Marguerite Bay, in Graham Land on the Fallières Coast of the Antarctica Peninsula. It was discovered and charted by the British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE) (1934-1937), under the leadership of John Rymill. He named the island for a daughter of Frank Debenham, who served as a member of the BGLE Advisory Committee. For those thinking about visiting, the coordinates are 68°08’S by 67°07’W.

June, Benue, Nigeria: a village area in the African nation.

June Lake: ah, this is where it gets interesting. My research has turned up at least 12 June Lakes, 6 in Canada and 6 in the United States. The Canadian ones are:

  • June Lake in the Sekwi Range of the Mackenzie Mountains in Yukon-Northwest Territories

  • June Lake on Vancouver Island in British Columbia

  • June Lake in the Algoma District of Ontario

  • June Lake in the Cochrane District of Ontario

  • June Lake in the Kenora District of Ontario

  • June Lake in the Rainy River District of Ontario

And, in the United States:

  • June Lake in Sharp County, Arkansas

  • June Lake in Mono County, California

  • June Lake, which is an unincorporated community in Mono County, California, next to the lake of the same name. According to the 2020 census, it had a population of 611.

  • June Lake in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness of Washington

  • June Lake in Iron County and Lincoln County, Wisconsin

  • June Lake in Marinette County, Wisconsin
